Meeting the future needs of local transport

15th Jul 2010

Keynote Address: Norman Baker MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport

The Government has made clear its most urgent priority is to tackle the UK's budget deficit – transport has already been hit hard with all major local transport projects halted until after the Comprehensive Spending Review. The Government now intends to reform the way funding and prioritisation of regional and local major schemes are made in the future.

This year's National Transport Awards Conference focuses on the difficult task that local authorities have in planning and delivering their strategies and services in such a tough fiscal environment where dramatic cuts are now inevitable.  New delivery models, efficiencies, innovation, leadership and a cross cutting approach are all now critical if key challenges like strong public transport growth, congestion, safety, health and climate change are still to be met.

Focussed panel sessions with key industry figures will look at governance, funding, buses, rail and highways and discuss the ways forward for meeting local transport needs with dramatically less funding.
